Summary

When Dr. Johnson refused to go along with their plans, his office was burglarized, his property was vandalized, and he received death threats. Eventually, an Indiana Trooper informed him that a hit had been placed on his life. A week before his insurance policy was set to expire, Dr. Johnson was attacked at his home late on a Sunday night. He survived the attack but was ironically charged with murder for defending his life.

At trial, Dr. Johnson was acquitted of murder but convicted of the lesser charge of voluntary manslaughter. However, the Indiana Supreme Court later reversed that conviction, recognizing the extreme misconduct by the police to secure it. Once released from prison, Dr. Johnson struggled to find a job or a place to live, as the police had plastered his picture across the internet, linking him to numerous heinous crimes he never committed.

Dr. Johnson's ordeal is a testament to the flaws in our justice system and the devastating impact of false accusations. His story highlights the resilience of the human spirit and the ongoing fight for true justice.

Author Biography

Dr. Van Johnson M.D. is a black native of Chicago, Illinois, who grew up in a religious family. At that time in history, America maintained a racially segregated society until 1964. In 1968, he was allowed to attend a traditionally all-white prep school. It was four years of culture shock, but he was conditioned to survive in white society. He graduated from a white college in three years, completed a Harvard Fellowship, and attended a white medical school and Psychiatry residency. But nothing could prepare him for what he would face after starting a private practice in a predominantly white, small town in central Indiana. It took six years to write this story. Some will question how this could possibly happen in this great democratic country—but it did happen!
