Summary

Born in Chile in 1917, Gonzalo Rojas was the son of a coal miner, whose vocation as a poet began with a stroke of lightning as a boy. From 1936 on Rojas was connected with the surrealist group Madragora, and he became a noted poet in his country. But in 1973, as charge d'affaires at the Chilean mission in Havana, the poet found himself homeless, unable to return to Pinochet's dictatorship, and accepted elsewhere only by East Germany.
