Author Biography

After family holidays in Devon and Cornwall as a child Sue Viccars returned to the southwest to study geography and archaeology at Exeter University, and apart from a brief spell with a London publishing company (mainly working on a tourist guide to Devon) has lived on Dartmoor’s eastern fringes ever since. She has always had a passionate interest in the outdoors, sparked off by camping holidays and exploring the Surrey hills on horseback as a child. A 20-year career at David & Charles publishers commissioning walking and outdoor books has been followed by a successful freelance career as an editor and author specialising in the southwest. Her first book, 50 Walks in Devon (AA Publishing), led to family walking books on Dartmoor, Exmoor and Cornwall (Jarrold Publishing) and she has worked on guides to the southwest for Time Out and the AA. Sue has written about family cycle routes in Devon and Cornwall, many articles for both national and local press, and was former editor of Dartmoor: the country magazine (Halsgrove) – a real chance to immerse herself in this beautiful area. She has explored Devon, Cornwall and Dorset extensively through her regular work revising Pathfinder walking guides (Jarrold) – she originally discovered many of the places covered in this guide on foot! She also wrote Aurum’s National Trail Guide to the Pennine Bridleway, the first National Trail designed to accommodate walkers, cyclists and horse riders. Further afield she has trekked in Morocco, walked across Corsica, been to Everest base camp, scrambled on Skye and in Snowdonia – and in the autumn of 2007 trekked to Kangchenjunga base camp in the Himalayas. Sue lives in a cottage on the eastern edge of Dartmoor with her two sons.
