Summary

Fundamentals of Phonetics is a total learning package designed to help instructors provide their students with the most current topics and theories related to phonetics and phonetic transcription. The focus is on learning the skills necessary for expert phonetic transcription of individuals with disordered speech. In addition, this book emphasizes issues tied to linguistic phonetics with an introduction to clinical phonetics, and to issues involving dialectal variation of speech, a topic missing (or dated) in most texts. Without auditory examples, it is difficult for the instructor to describe and explain dialects; and difficult for the students to understand several topics associated with speech production such as word stress and production of certain speech sounds. With that in mind, Fundamentals of Phonics includes a free audio CD that allows students to listen to examples, oral discussions, and several review exercises from the text. A CD icon alerts students to listen to the CD while completing these specific exercises.
