Author Biography

About the Authors

Judith F. Robbins, Ph.D serves as the chair of the Early Childhood Education B.S.
Ed. program in the Department of Teaching and Learning, College of Education at Georgia
Southern University in Statesboro, Georgia. She earned her Ph.D. from Florida State
University in Language and Literacy Education and has taught at Georgia Southern since
1991. Dr. Robbins is an associate professor of Early Childhood Education and teaches
courses in the language arts, including the reading, writing and children’s literature methods
courses at both the graduate and undergraduate levels. She also supervises student
teachers and interns in a number of field-based courses, and works with area schools in
a variety of capacities. She is actively involved in a number of organizations, including
the Eastern Educational Research Association, an affiliate of the American Educational
Research Association, where she serves as chair of Professional Development, Division 9.
Dr. Robbins frequently presents at national and international conferences.

 

Julie Garlen Maudlin, Ed.D., is an assistant professor of Early Childhood Education
at Georgia Southern University, in Statesboro, Georgia, where she teaches courses in
P–12 Curriculum, Instruction and Assessment. Dr. Maudlin is a former elementary school
teacher and instructional coach, and is certified as a K–5 educator by the Georgia Professional
Standards Commission. She lives in Southeast Georgia with her husband, Chris,
and their three children.

 

Susan T. Franks, Ed.D., is an associate professor of Early Childhood Education and
serves as the chair of the Early Childhood Education M.Ed. program in the Department of
Teaching and Learning, College of Education at Georgia Southern University in Statesboro,
Georgia. She earned her Ed.D. from Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University
in Elementary Education with an emphasis in Curriculum and Instruction. Dr. Franks
teaches courses in the language arts, including reading and children’s literature methods
courses at the graduate and undergraduate levels. She also supervises student teachers
and interns in a number of field-based courses and works with classroom teachers in an
ongoing program of consultant work. She is actively involved in a number of organizations
including the Eastern Educational Research Association, an affiliate of the American
Educational Research Association, where she serves as chair of Human Development,
Division 3. Dr. Franks is frequently presents at national and international conferences.

About Test Selection
The GACE assessments are offered during morning and afternoon test sessions. Each
test session is four hours in length. The morning session has a reporting time of 7:45 A.M.
and ends at approximately 12:30 P.M. The afternoon session has a reporting time of 1:00
P.M. and ends at approximately 5:45 P.M. You may select tests for a single test session or
for both the morning and afternoon test sessions.

 

The number of tests you may register to take in one test session is determined by the
assessment(s) for which you are registering. Each assessment consists of one or more
tests. Because you are registering for an assessment that includes multiple tests, you may
take one or two Early Childhood Education tests in the same test session.

 

About the GACE Early Childhood Education  Assessment
The purpose of the GACE Early Childhood Education test is to assess the knowledge
and skills of prospective Georgia Early Childhood teachers in the areas of Reading and
English Language Arts, Social Studies, Mathematics, Science, Health, Physical Education
and the Arts. The GACE Early Childhood Education assessment actually contains two
tests:

• Test I—Test Code 001:
Reading and English Language Arts: (approximately 40 selected response questions and one constructed-response question)
Social Studies: (approximately 20 selected-response questions and one constructed-response question)

• Test II—Test Code 002:
Mathematics: (approximately 25 selected-response questions and one constructed-response question)
Science: (approximately 20 selected-response questions and one constructed-response question)
Health, Physical Education, and the Arts: (approximately15 selected-response questions and no constructed-response question)

 

What Does the Test Cover?
The table on pages 4–5 lists the objectives used as the basis for the GACE Early Childhood
Education assessment and the approximate number of questions in both Tests I and II.
A thorough review of all the specific skills tested on the exams is the focus of this book.

 

How Is the GACE Early Childhood Education Test Scored?
Your total raw score is converted to a scaled score. A scaled score is a combination of
the number of scorable questions you answered correctly on the selected-response section
of the test and the scores you received on any constructed-response assignments and then
converted to a scale from 100 to 300. The score of 220 is the passing score for any GACE
test. The passing score for each test is established by the Georgia Professional Standards
Commission and is based on the professional judgments and recommendations of Georgia
educators. “Pass” or “Did Not Pass” status is based on your total score for each test. If you
met the passing score, your total test scaled score is not reported in order to preclude the use
of GACE scores for purposes other than Georgia educator certifi cation (e.g., employment,
college admission screening).

The passing scaled score for each part is 220. There is no composite or combining both
tests. Each must be passed individually.

 

When Will I Receive My Score Report and What Will It Look Like?
Your scores are reported directly to the Georgia Professional Standards Commission and
are automatically added to your certification application file. Your scores are also reported to
the Georgia institution of higher education or other agency that you indicated when you registered.

The score report is for your information only and you are not to submit it with your
application for certification. Of course, as with any important document, you should keep a
copy for your permanent records.

Unofficial test scores are posted on the Internet at 5:00 P.M. Eastern Time on the score
report dates listed onhttp://www.gace.nesinc.com/GA4_testdates.asp.

For each test date, the unofficial scores are kept on the Internet for approximately two
weeks. For security reasons, you may only view these scores once during the posting period.

 

Can I Retake the Test?
If you wish to retake a test, you may do so at any subsequent test administration. Please
consult the GACE Website atwww.gace.nesinc.comfor information about test registration.
The GACE website also includes information regarding test retakes and score reports.

 

Who Administers the Test?
The Georgia Professional Standards Commission (PSC) has contracted with Evaluation
Systems to assist in the development and administration of the Georgia Assessments for
the Certification of Educators (GACE). The GACE tests are aligned with state and national
standards for educator preparation and with state standards for the pre-kindergarten through
twelfth grade student curriculum (Georgia Performance Standards).

When Should I Take the Test?
Georgia law requires that teachers demonstrate mastery of basic skills, professional

When Should I Start Studying?
It is never too early to start studying for the GACE Early Childhood Education assessment.
The earlier you begin, the more time you will have to sharpen your skills. Do not procrastinate!
Cramming is not an effective way to study because it does not allow you the time
you need to think about the content, review the subareas, and take the practice tests.

 

What Should I Study First?
