Summary

This book outlines and illustrates German civilian life in World War II: the structure of the Nazi state, and the huge range of duties - from farm and factory labour to vital air-raid services - into which women, old men, teenagers and even children were pressed during the war years. Meanwhile, German families suffered the same hardships as British - conscription, extra civic duties, severe shortages and rationing, homelessness and evacuation, separation and, for many, bereavement. In addition, they had to endure a regime which had destroyed all civil liberties since Hitler first came to power in 1933. Book jacket.
