Summary

At a first glance, the relationship between humans and their environment seems to be a question of practice: What do we have to do to organize our actions in a way that is ecologically sound and sustainable? Until now, the search for the "right practice" mainly resulted in appeals to our common sense and ended in failure. From the perspective of modern difference theory, both society and individual humans appear as independent and autonomous systems that are not easily unsettled by their environment. What we need is a new look at the relationships between society, humans, and environment. This volume studies these relationships and proposes new ways of understanding human/environment relationships, such as those employed in contemporary global change research. At the same time, this volume provides an important contribution to the discussion of an integrated theoretical basis of scientifically and socio-culturally oriented geography.
