Summary

For the past nine years, architect Brian MacKay-Lyons has directed Ghost research lab, a two-week design-build internship and educational initiative for architects, professors and students which takes place every summer on the coast of Nova Scotia. The program is designed to promote the transfer of architectural knowledge through direct experience, learning taught in the master-builder tradition, with an emphasis on issues of landscape, material culture and community. More than a documentation of the design-build event-with drawings, models, and process and final photographs-Ghost reveals MacKay-Lyons' exploration of the idea of utopia through the history of the land, and specifically through architecture itself. The book features essays by some of the most eminent architectural critics, including Christine Macy, Brian Carter, Karl Habermann, Robert Ivy, Kenneth Frampton, Thomas Fisher, Juhani Pallasmaa, Peter Buchanan and Robert McCarter.
