Summary

Many years ago, a novel was written that traced the lives of two star-crossed lovers who overcame their different heritage, societal expectations and belief systems to be together. The novel was Nakoa's Woman and it earned Gayle Rogers respect and fame. Now over twenty years later she has continued the journey of these two souls through time in Gladyce with a C. This novel begins with the headstrong heroine Gladys Horton taking control of her own life and leaving home to follow her dreams. Her first step to individuality is to change her name and before long she falls in love and has two lovely daughters. One of her daughters, Mylayna, dies only to come back to life with a special gift -- she's psychic. This new power is the source of many adventures with Mylayna as she is able to communicate with members of her family who have been dead for years. Mylayna's life begins to shape the rest of the novel. She goes off to college and falls in love with a young man, Nathaniel Drake. He is sent to fight in World War II and suffers an accident that gives him amnesia. Even though Nathaniel can't remember her, Mylayna vows to never give up on him no matter what the cost. It becomes apparent to the reader when Mylayna runs into Nathaniel that these two lovers are the reincarnation of the lovers from Nakoa's Woman. As their story unfolds in the early twentieth century, the reader is swept away by the drama, passion and romance of these two destined lovers who are unaware that fate has already set their course. Gayle Rogers has again succeeded in creating a world that is both vivid and poetic. The fact that Rogers herself is a believer in reincarnation and destiny brings an authentic sentiment that would be lacking in any other work. Her mastery of language and the ability to reconnect with characters and feelings she had not written about in over twenty years is uncanny. Gladyce with a C is a shining achievement that both fans new and old will appreciate.
