By exploring questions of access, finance and pedagogy, it considers global higher education as a space for understanding the promises and pressures associated with competing demands for economic growth, equity, sustainability and democracy.

Author Biography

VINCENT CARPENTIER is a lecturer in History of Education in the Faculty of Policy and Society, Institute of Education, University of London.  He is the course leader for the MA in Higher and Professional Education.  He is also a co-editor of the London Review of Education.  Vincent's research examines the historical links between education and economic systems. He has recently completed an ESRC-funded research project. The research aimed at providing a long-term insight into the mechanisms between funding, widening access and economic aspects on higher education in order to contribute to contemporary debates in the UK and France. He conducts his academic work in both French and English and the results of his interdisciplinary research have been published in France, Germany, Switzerland and the UK.
ELAINE UNTERHALTER contributes to teaching on post graduate courses in education and international development at the Institute of Education. She specialises in gender, education and development and is currently leading two research projects with this focus, one funded by the ESRC and one by ActionAid. She has extensive experience of editing collections of papers and journals. Her most recent edited collections are published by Palgrave (with Melanie Walker, 2007, Amartya Sens capability approach and social justice in education) and with Oxfam with Sheila Aikman. 2005, Beyond Access: Transforming policy and practice for gender equality in education). She is one of the co-editors of the journal Theory and Research in Education. (published by sage).
