Summary

This volume considers the spread of Spanish today and particularly its role in the processes of globalization. Spanish is frequently dominant in contact with other languages. But how contested is its hegemony and how far does it threaten other languages? How are these other minoritized languages faring in a world of few strong, global languages?

Author Biography

CLARE MAR-MOLINERO is Professor of Spanish sociolinguistics and Head of Modern Languages at the University of Southampton, UK. She teaches and has published widely on language policies and on global Spanish. Her publications include The Politics of Language in the Spanish-speaking World (2000), The Spanish-Speaking World: Introduction to Sociolinguistic Issues (1997), Nationalism and the Nation in the Iberian Peninsula (co-edited with Angel Smith, 1996) and Language Ideologies, Policies and Practices: Language and the Future of Europe (co-edited with Patrick Stevenson, 2005). She is chair of the International Association for the Study of Spanish in Society (SiS).

MIRANDA STEWART is Senior Lecturer in Spanish and Latin American Studies at the University of Strathclyde, Glasgow, UK. Her teaching and research interests include sociolinguistics, spoken interaction, discourse analysis, interactional pragmatics and translation studies. Her publications include The Spanish Language Today (1999) and Politeness in Europe (co-edited with Leo Hickey, 2005) as well as articles in journals such as The Journal of Pragmatics, The Journal of Politeness Research and Multilingua where she explores issues such as the pragmatics of personal reference and the co-construction of interaction. She is a member of the Executive Committee of the  International Association for the Study of Spanish in Society (SiS).
