Summary

Yune, a middle-aged Han Chinese woman goes to "Kingdom of Women" to meet Namu, a Mosuo girl who is probably bearing the child of Yune's husband. The Mosuo is an ethnic group in China that practices "walking marriage." Among the Mosuo, married couples don't live together, and there is no marital obligation among them. But Yune is determined to persuade Zashi, a young man that is supposed to walk-marry Namu, to go against his custom and take the responsibilities of a father. While carrying out her plan, not only does Yune fall in love with the needy, moody, and capricious young man, but her values concerning marriage and procreation are also being challenged by the Mosuo's customs and beliefs.
