Summary

On New Year's Day in 2000, Dr. Khassan Baiev prepared his makeshift hospital in Alkhan Kala to receive the victims of another bloody chapter in Chechnya's war for independence from Russia. In the worst days of that battle, he operated around the clock for thirty-six hours, even performing brain surgeries though medical instruments and supplies were scarce. Throughout the war, he gave medical assistance to anyone who needed it, Chechen rebels and Russian soldiers alike, which led to his abduction and death threats from extremists on both sides.

Author Biography

Khassan Baiev lives with his family near Boston, Massachusetts. Nicholas and Ruth Daniloff live in Cambridge, Massachusetts.
