Summary

In this book, the authors challenge the assumption that the keys to experiencing grief lie in overtly expressing emotion and seeking support, arguing that there are many different ways in which individuals experience, express, and adapt to grief which can be influenced, but not determined, by gender. Two patterns of grieving, intuitive and instrumental, are considered along with the roles that personality, culture, gender, and other factors have in shaping one's response to grief. Specific interventions are discussed to allow grief counselors, psychologists, and other mental health professionals to fully appreciate and understand these different approaches to mourning. Numerous case examples and vignettes illustrate various grieving styles and ways for counselors to promote healthy grief responses in their clients. Book jacket.
