This image was used to illustrate the tale of the ‘Willow-Wren’ in Grimm’s Fairy Tales, Vol. 5 (1920). It depicts the owl standing guard over the wren after he dared call himself ‘King of the Birds’. Carl Fahringer was an Austrian artist who studied at both the Vienna Academy and the Munich Academy, and travelled widely throughout Europe and the Far East.
