Summary

One day, eleven-year-old Linnet wakes up to find she is growing wings--wings with soft auburn feathers, which only at first can be hidden with long hair and loose clothes. From then on Linnet struggles to find a way to fit into the world. At first, she hides her wings. Then she runs away, to a hidden place in the mountains where others like her are also hiding. Finally, she discovers a secret network of people with wings that extends all over the world. But even though the network means Linnet could go anywhere in the world she would like, if it's all a big secret, is it any better than staying hidden in the mountains? Linnet decides it's not. Finally, it's time to let the world know she's here.

Author Biography

"I grew up as an odd kid in the mountains of Montana," writes Laurel Winter. "I didn’t have wings, but I was klutzy and bookwormish and didn’t always fit in. I attended a one-room country school for eight grades." Today Laurel writes poems and short stories, and she loves to paint and draw and sculpt. She says this novel began as a short story, but its plot surprised her. Together with her husband and twin sons, she lives in Rochester, Minnesota. GROWING WINGS is her first novel.
