The individual who sees their self both in their isolation as well as a part of a collective whole, can become a force for change. We can’t, we won’t sit and wait for the dominant culture, governments, corporations and industries to do something to heal this planet, to feed humanity and ensure a freedom and equality of life among all humans. We start with ourselves. This is the time to speak out and to act, before we run out of time. Handbook for a Burning Age is focused on bringing us together for that purpose. We need to also speak to the deniers, the nay-sayers and the unbelievers. Perhaps one way to do that is to not bombard readers with statistics and pie charts, but to speak of the problems using different words, narratives, and stories that everyone can relate to regardless of their views. Handbook for a Burning Age reviews an art and literary history of those who’ve gone before, men and women who have stood up in their village to speak out, who have wondered about the wilds of nature and been awakened to an elemental fact of human existence: we are the universe. Handbook for a Burning Age is about igniting a fire within us all. Before we can change or reverse the climate of the planet, we must first change the climate within our own souls. This book gives a history, of how people have been doing this for several centuries. Their aspirations are our inspirations.
