Summary

Scobie is an officer in a war-torn West African state. When he is passed over for a promotion, he borrows money to send his wife away on holiday. In her absence, he falls in love with Helen, a young widow, and his life is transformed. With an inability to distinguish between love, pity and responsibility, Scobie moves towards his final damnation...

Author Biography

Graham Greene, whose life (1904-1991) nearly spanned the twentieth century, was one of its greatest novelists. Educated at Oxford, he started his career as a subeditor on The Times and began to attract notice as a novelist with his fourth book, Stamboul Train, in 1932. In 1935 he trekked across northern Liberia, his first experience of Africa, told in Journey Without Maps. He converted to Catholicism in 1926 and in 1938, in The Lawless Roads, reported on religious persecution in Mexico, which served as background for his famous The Power and the Glory. During World War II he worked for the British secret service in Sierra Leone; afterward, he began wide-ranging travels as a journalist. His books include Brighton Rock, Our Man in Havana, The Quiet American, and The Comedians.
