Summary

When developing this book, Dr. Angelo Giardino, a pediatrician with ample experience in child abuse cases, compiled a table of contents consisting of the most important topics related to abuse. He wrote chapters on the four main categories of abuse-physical abuse, sexual abuse, emotional abuse, and neglect-and then recruited five other experienced professionals to address specialized topics. A pediatrician, a nurse, two therapists, and a child and family development specialist contributed chapters on their areas of expertise, including: Facts on teenaged dating violence and ways to recognize the signs and prevent adolescents' involvement in abusive relationships, The role schools play in mandated reporting and teaching children social, life, and communication skills, Childcare and choosing an appropriate care provider, Risks posed by the Internet and advice for keeping children safe when they use e-mail, instant messages, and chat rooms, How art therapy helps children express their feelings about abusive situations and resolve the trauma they have experienced.
