Richard Woodman has been a professional seafarer since 1960, serving as a midshipman and navigating officer in the cargo liners of the Blue Funnel and Glen Lines, before joining Trinity House in 1967. Promoted to Commander in 1980, Richard has commanded several of the Corporation's lighthouse tenders, maintaining aids to navigation in British waters. After thirty-one years at sea he worked in operations management with the rank of Captain retiring to write full time in 1997. His first historical novel, An Eye of the Fleet published in 1981, launched the fourteen-strong Nathaniel Drinkwater series. Along with a further fourteen novels, Richard has also produced a number of highly successful non-fiction titles including the widely acclaimed Arctic Convoys (1994) and Malta Convoys (2000) and most recently The Sea Warriors (2001). In the Autumn of 2001 Richard was awarded the Desmond Wettern Maritime Media Award for his contribution to the promotion of British seafaring.
