Author Biography

Binyavanga Wainaina was an author, publisher, journalist, LGBTQ activist, and one of the most important voices in African literature. He won the Caine Prize for African Writing and went on to establish Kwani?, a literary magazine that offers a platform for new Kenyan writers. His Granta essay "How to Write About Africa" became a sensation in 2005. Mr. Wainaina's 2011 memoir, One Day I Will Write About This Place, received critical success at home and abroad. He died of a stroke in 2019, but his revolutionary work continues to impact literature from and about the African continent.
