Summary

People of the small town of Barksdale believe thata young African American newcomer might be thesecond coming of Christ. They base their specula-tions on what appear to be miracles performed in the presence of multiple witnesses, including thebigoted High Sheriff of Griggs County. While thetiny community struggles with a dysfunctional schoolsystem and political corruption in the background, the strange young man denounces church leader-ship and gives voice to heterodox opinions that frighten preachers and make churchy church folkuncomfortable. Although he denies any special identity, his apparent resurrection of a man interredten years earlier shocks the townspeople and attractsglobal attention. The implication inspires a series ofextreme responses: The sheriff submits an earth-shaking confession to the local district attorney; a self-righteous Uncle Tom gives away his entire multi-million dollar estate; a tidal wave of pulpit pink slipsensue; and, racial tensions rise between AfricanAmericans and Whites who emotionally reject theidea of a wooly haired Messiah. Modern day Phari-sees jockey to camouflage their ungodly impulses. Some tremble at his presence fearing that he mightsee through their sheep clothing. But others are praying that the capture and scrutiny of the man hesupposedly brought back from the dead will be thedeath of what they hope is just blasphemousskullduggery.
