Summary

This is a proposal for a revised edition of Kenny's Brief History, with illustrations. The book has done comparatively very well, but even 12,600 copies in 6 years is probably underperforming for a book with such trade potential. The price has also crept up to 17.99. It still sells c. 1000 copies, and most of these are through the trade.Tony Kenny does not want to revisit the content in any significant way. The questions really concern the following- Including colour plates as well as halftones (like Kenny's Illustrated Oxford History)- Call it An Illustrated Brief History of Western Philosophy to signal to the trade that this is a relevantly different product (rather than a revised edition)- Release initially as a trade hardback or simultaneous? First edition blurb In this lucid and masterful work, the eminent scholar Anthony Kenny offers an indispensable resource - the most concise and compelling story of the complete development of philosophy available.Spanning 2,500 years of thought, this superb volume provides essential coverage of the most influential philosophers of the Western world, including Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Jesus, Augustine, Aquinas, Machiavelli, Descartes, Hobbes, Spinoza, Berkeley, Hume, Rousseau, Kant, Hegel, Marx, Mill, Nietzsche, Darwin, Freud, Frege, Russell, and Wittgenstein, amongst many others.Unrivaled in its authority and range, the book is ideal for anyone with an interest in Western thought.

Author Biography

Sir Anthony Kenny was formerly Pro-Vice-Chancellor at Oxford University, Master of Balliol College, Oxford and Warden of Rhodes House, Oxford. He was also President of the British Academy, Chairman of the Board of the British Library and a Trustee of Wittgenstein’s copyrights. He is the author or editor of more than 40 books, including Wittgenstein (Revised Edition, 2006), Frege: An Introduction to the Founder of Modern Analytic Philosophy (2000) and The Legacy of Wittgenstein (1984), all published by Blackwell.
