Excerpts

"The changing landscape of America looms outside the windows of the 'Southwest Chief'. The train leaves the urban sprawl of Chicago in its dust as it rolls past Illinois's prairies and over two great rivers, the Missouri and the mighty Mississippi. In western Missouri, the railway begins to trace the Santa Fe Trail. Opened in 1821, the trail blazed the way for pioneers, missionaries, trappers and traders from Franklin, Missouri, to Santa Fe. It crosses the spacious wheatfields of Kansas, and the legendary Old West until it ascends the towering Sangre de Cristo Mountains and the Ratón Pass into New Mexico's high country near Santa Fe."
