Summary

Irish immigration to the United States can be divided into fivegeneral periods, from 1640 to the present: the colonial, prestarvation, great starvation, post-starvation, and post-independenceperiods. The Irish first entered the Great Lakesby way of the Ohio River and Appalachianpasses, spreading north along the expandingfrontier. After the War of 1812, the Irishwere heavily represented in frontier militarygarrisons. Many Irish moved into the Detroitmetropolitan area as well as to farmingareas throughout Michigan. Irish nationalism in both Michigan andthe United States has been closely linkedwith the labor movement in which IrishAmericans were among the earliest organizersand leaders.
