Author Biography

Phyllis C. Hunter has been an advisor, consultant, and professional developer in reading for many educational stakeholders. Her roles have included advisor to the President of the United States and Reading Manager under former Secretary of Education Rod Paige. She’s also served as an elementary school principal, middle school assistant principal, mentor teacher and speech and language therapist. She’s the author of the Phyllis C. Hunter Classroom Libraries published by Scholastic. As an internationally renowned, award-winning educational consultant and author, Mrs. Hunter is a sought after motivational speaker. Phyllis Hunter serves on the advisory board for the Broad Prize in Urban Education, which awards the nation’s largest yearly K–12 public education prize of 4 million dollars. She is also on the advisory board of several national literacy organizations, including Consortium for Reading Excellence (CORE), the Neuhaus Education Center, and the National Center for Family Literacy. In 2009, Scholastic Education presented Mrs. Hunter with its inaugural Heroes Award for her contributions to the field of children’s literacy. She was also honored as the 2002 Marcus Garvey Educator of the Year by the National Alliance of Black School Educators.
