Summary

The First Jewish women to leave a significant mark as a writer and intellectual.Sarra Copia Sulam(1600?-41)was doubly tainted in the eyes of her contemporaries by her religion and gender. A remarkable figure relatively neglected in modern scholarship, Sulam occupied a unique place in early seventeenth-century cultural lite, opening her home, in the Venetion ghetto, to jews and Christians a like as a literary salon In her writings, she argued her own views and forcefully defended herself against her critics.

Author Biography

Don Harrán is the Artur Rubinstein Professor Emeritus of Musicology at the Hebrew University of Jersualem. He is the author of many books, including Salamone Rossi, Jewish Musician in Late Renaissance Mantua.
