Summary

English summary: Joachim Justus Breithaupt (1658-1732) is considered to be one of the founding fathers of Pietism in Halle yet the research into his life, work and influence stands only at the earliest stage. An interdisciplinary workshop in the research center of Castle Friedenstein of the University of Erfurt connected the diverse trends, which are documented in this volume. Breithaupt unified in the course of his life a mixture of rolls, academic as well as leading church positions: Professor of Homiletics in Kiel, court preacher and consistory council member in Meininger, pastor, senior of the Evangelical Ministry and professor in Erfurt, professor of the theological faculty, director of the theological seminary, inspector and consistory member in Halle, General Superintendent of the Duchy of Magdeburg, provost of the cloister of the Blessed Virgin Mary, and abbot of Berge monastery. The authors of this volume enter into the biographic elements including the rendition of his own autobiographical writing and associate these sources with his specific formation of pietistic theology in theory and practice. 224p (Franz Steiner Verlag 2011)
