Summary

Protector of the Wilderness J ohn Muir (1838-1914) is best remembered as the founder of the Sierra Club, father of America's conservation movement, and the architect of a still growing environmental ethic. Born in Scotland, Muir immigrated to America in 1849. Withlimited formal education but limitless curiosity, he became an explorer, naturalist, conservationist, and a widely respected authority on botany, glaciers, and forestry. Best known for his long association with the Yosemite Valley and Sierra Nevada Mountains of California, Muir also explored the southern states, Alaska, the Great Basin, and the Mojave Desert.
