Author Biography

Howard Pyle was born in Wilmington, Delaware in 1853. After he finished high school, he went to an art school and then worked in his father's leather shop. Soon he returned to the work he loved best - illustrations - and opened his own school for young artists. Pyle liked to create special worlds where anything could happen. He called them "islands of fantasy or imagination." Sometimes he used his brush to capture these worlds in pictures, and sometimes his pen to write the stories himself. These stories include pirate adventures on the high seas, vivid tales of American colonial life, and legends of the knights in the days of chivalry. In King Arthur and the Knights of the Round Table, Pyle invites us into one of his many fantasy lands. He spent seven years researching, illustrating and compiling four volumes on the legends of King Arthur. He studied legends that were written in Old English, Welsh, French, and German. Howard Pyle gathered these old tales and retold them in his own way, writing them down so anyone could open a book anytime, anyplace, and step into the magical fantasy worlds he loved best.
