Summary

There is a child in all of us so I could not resist reading Mimi Chau's story, "Koala Kelly", on my e-reader. The tale is of a young koala whose home is in the idyllic gum trees of coastal Australia. Like other koalas, she has close friends, including Sam, a lively 'prince of the koala kingdom' and a fellow spirit. Then comes a bushfire, the singeing of Sam, and their separation, only to be reunited on the morrow. I read the book to my grandchild who especially enjoyed the delightful drawings by Francis Lee that accompanied the excitement. The fire caught her attention and concern however the happy ending allayed any fears. The story has animal and environmental interests and a simple story line. I recommend it as suitable for children in the early stages of learning either as parental reading or as early literacy material. - John Cleverley
