Summary

Capturing the French society of the Third Republic this story follows the fall of the old guard of the clans of Schoudler and Monnerie. The collapse of banker Noel Schoudler portrays the fall of the amassed fortunes during the nineteenth century and the greed of speculators who succumb to the global financial crisis of 1929. Urbain de la Monnerie blind octogenarian and inhabitant of the Mauglaives castle, embodies the decline of an old aristocracy that is about to disappear. By contrast nothing seems to stop the rise of upstart Simon Lachaume a politically cold cerebral self made man. This novel provides an accurate portrayal of public and private French society between wars.
