In the early autumn, Fausto decides to leave his failed marriage and his smothering life back in Milan to settle indefinitely in the area where he spent every summer as a child. There he will try to find a new voice to write while working as a cook in a restaurant managed by Babette, where he will befriend some of the very few townspeople: a retired forest ranger who cares little for human affairs, and a young waitress passing through, searching for the thirteen-thousand-feet mountains she learned about from books. Autumn gives way to winter, and grasslands and farmers give way to snow and the first skiers, but also to the imminent return of the wolves, who will travel through the deep valleys alongside the wind.
