Summary

The Time Traveler tells his friends about his first journey through time. Thanks to the invention of a machine he can travel to the past or the future with a simple movement of the lever. The protagonist travels to the year 802701 and contemplates a pathetic panorama, a consequence of the evolutionary doctrine. A world inhabited by two humanoid species: the Eloi, lazy, gentle and friendly vegetarians, devoid of intelligence; and the heartless and terrible Morlocks, underground dwellers and heirs of the subjugated classes, who occasionally rise to the surface to devour the Eloi. The two races, whose names are taken from the biblical Eli and Moloch, symbolize Wells's vision of the end result of unbridled capitalism: a worthless upper class that would eventually be devoured by a proletariat driven to the depths.
