Summary

Home to Antonescu, a loyal ally of Hitler and Ceaucescu and one of the harshest Stalinist dictators of the 20th century, Romania has suffered the unspeakable and is now in search of a better future amid the European crisis and Russia’s renewed power. From his first visit in the 1980s, Robert D. Kaplan, one of today’s most influential thinkers, has followed the country’s evolution from all angles and from every corner, engaging with great thinkers of the past and with all kinds of present-day Romanians who are fighting to keep humanism alive there.  A la sombra de Europa is the story of a geographical and ideological border, and an indispensable book for understanding the crisis with Russia and the challenges the new continent must face.
