Using evidence derived from field-work, observation, documentary sources and archaeology, the authors show how to trace the landscape of the town, revealing its invisible past and its future potential. This clearly written and eminently readable book teems with examples of how towns have acquired their present appearance - how, for example, Norwich is a linked group of Roman, Saxon and Scandinavian elements, all of them still discernible to the informed eye. Towns, the authors argue, are more than just places where people go for shopping, entertainment and employment. They are intricate compositions made up of many features, man-made and natural, ancient and modern. The Landscape of Towns brings to life the rich variety of town life over two millennia, exploring prehistoric settlements, Roman towns, medieval communities, Regency spas, Victorian industrial towns and the spectre of urban redevelopment in the twentieth century.
