Summary

Since the early 1990s a research project has been active in Berlin compiling a repertory of medieval sermons extant in the vernacular. In 1996 this research group in Berlin launched an initiative to expand the study across all European languages and cultures. As a result a European collaborative project called SERMO was estabilished, bringing together scholars who are active researchers of medieval preaching in their own language. The SERMO group meets regularly and focuses on a particular theme. In November 2000 the symposium in Antwerp and Brussels examined the theme of the Last Judgement. On this occasion a speaker was invited to address the Latin preaching tradition. The reworked presentations give a unique, comparative insight into preaching on this theme in sermons from France, Germany, England, the Low Countries and Sweden.
