This book presents a comprehensive view of the ways in which the state andsocial actors use a range of rules and practices to govern and control manyareas of social and work life, from the environment to cyberspace, from labourrelations to corporate governance. The book explores the impact of globalizationand technological change on regulation and governance and the challenges theypose to traditional notions of state sovereignty.The 15 chapters by leading scholars and specialists in the field are organizedinto five parts: Theoretical Dimensions; Labour, Capital, and the State; DisputeResolution; Governing Self-Regulation; and Historical and Cultural Perspectiveson Regulation and Governance. While some chapters present theoreticalunderstandings and overviews of particular areas of state involvement in civilsociety, others offer case studies of specific instances of regulation andgovernance. Indeed, a recurrent theme in this important collection is thathowever much the regulation and governance of society seem to change, the stateremains involved either directly or indirectly by overseeing the self-regulationof social actors.
