Summary

Well over a decade ago, Irv Goldstein assembled a volume on organizational training for the SIOP Frontiers Series that helped to stimulate a decade of remarkable development in training theory and research. Most notably, the area has witnessed a shift from predominantly theoretical research to a blossoming of theory focused on the influence of training interventions on learning processes, which prompted an explosion of theory-driven empirical research and led to a "renaissance" in the field of training over the following decade. This volume is designed to build on this progress and project forward the continuing and emerging issues likely to shape theory and research in this area of endeavor for the decade to come... and beyond. Moreover, in recognition of the increasing importance of knowledge capacity and human capital to organizational effectiveness, the book is also designed to broaden and extend the focus beyond training per se to encompass learning, training, and development in organizations. Author Biography

Steve W. J. Kozlowski, Ph.D. is a Professor of Organizational Psychology at Michigan State University. His research program is focused on active learning, self-regulation, and adaptive performance; simulation-based training; enhancing team learning and effectiveness; and the critical role of team leaders in the development of adaptive teams. The goal of this programmatic work is to generate actionable theory, research-based principles, and deployable tools to facilitate the development of adaptive individuals, teams, and organizations. His research has been supported by the Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the Army Research Institute for the Behavioral and Social Sciences, and the Naval Air Warfare Center Training Systems Division, among others. Dr. Kozlowski is Editor (and a former Associate Editor) for the Journal of Applied Psychology. He has served on the Editorial Boards of the Academy of Management Journal, Human Factors, the Journal of Applied Psychology, and Organizational Behavior and Human Decision Processes. He is a Fellow of the American Psychological Science, the International Association for Applied Psychology, and the Society for Industrial and Organizational Psychology. Dr. Kozlowski received his B.A. in psychology from the University of Rhode Island, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in organizational psychology from The Pennsylvania State University. Eduardo Salas is University Trustee Chair and Pegasus Professor of Psychology at the University of Central Florida (UCF) and program director for the Human Systems Integration Research Department at UCF's Institute for Simulation and Training. Salas is a Fellow of the American Psychological Association (SIOP and Divisions 19, 21, and 49), the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society, and the Association for Psychological Science. He was editor of Human Factors in 2000-2004. For 15 years, he was a senior research psychologist and head of the Training Technology Development Branch of NAVAIR-Orlando. Salas served as a principle investigator for numerous RD programs focusing on teamwork, team training, simulation-based training, decision-making under stress, learning methodologies, and performance assessment. He helps organizations foster teamwork, design and implement team training strategies, facilitate training effectiveness, manage decision-making under stress, develop performance measurement tools, and design learning and simulation - based environments. Salas has coauthored more than 330 journal articles and book chapters and has co-edited 20 books. He has served as an editorial board member for numerous journals and is an associate editor of the Journal of Applied Psychology. He received a Ph.D. in industrial and organizational psychology from Old Dominion University in 1984.
