Summary

The major purpose of this book is to document the exclusion of Latinos from the teaching of U.S. history in the public schools of Texas. Given the under-representation of Latinos in the most powerful and popular media, it becomes more incumbent upon educators to fill this knowledge gap that exists regarding the largest minority group in the nation. This is especially so in a state such as Texas which has perhaps the longest history of Latino presence, power and influence. The book investigates the extent to which the adopted textbooks, the curriculum standards and the actual classroom practice related to the teaching of the U.S. history serve to exclude this significant minority form our nation's historical narrative. Although Texas is the specific focus, the very fact that this state exerts an extraordinary influence on textbook content and curriculum standards nationwide, gives this investigation national relevance. Among its distinctive features is that this book combines a variety of methodsincluding content analyses, interviews, and participant observation to provide a more holistic understanding of how U.S. history is taught in Texas. It is of potential interest to educators and curriculum planners, as well as to students of history, sociology, and educational policy.
