Summary

The papers given at the conference and collected in this volume concentrate on three aspects of Berlin's concept of pluralism. Aileen Kelly, Mark Lilla, and Steven Lukes trace the development and consequences of his distinction between "hedgehogs," thinkers who have a single, unified theory of human action and history, and "foxes," who believe in multiplicity and resist the impulse to subject humanity to a universal vision. Ronald Dworkin, Bernard Williams, Thomas Nagel, and Charles Taylor examine how liberalism can be sustained in the face of Berlin's insight that equally legitimate values, such as liberty and equality, may come into irreconcilable conflict. Avishai Margalit, Richard Wollheim, Michael Walzer, and Robert Silvers take up Berlin's advocacy for the State of Israel and his hopes for it as a place where the often contrary values of liberalism and nationalism might find harmonious resolution.

Ronald Dworkin is Quain Professor of Jurisprudence at University College, University of London, and Professor of Law and Philosophy at New York University. Aileen Kelly is a fellow of King's College, Cambridge. Mark Lilla is Professor of Social Thought at the University of Chicago. Steven Lukes is Professor of Moral Philosophy at the University of Siena and Professor of Sociology at New York University. Avishai Margalit is Professor of Philosophy at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Thomas Nagel is Professor of Philosophy and Law at New York University. Robert Silvers is co-editor of The New York Review of Books. Charles Taylor is Professor of Political Science and Philosophy at McGill University. Michael Walzer is Professor of Social Science at the Institute for Advanced Study in Princeton, New Jersey. Bernard Williams is Deutsch Professor of Philosophy at the University of California, Berkeley, and a fellow of All Souls College, Oxford. Richard Wollheim is Chairman of the Philosophy Department at the University of California, Berkeley.
