Those featured in this book lived in an era when smuggling was rife, liquor was plentiful, and murder was rampant. Many become legends in their own lifetimes and, although often feared and loathed, are remembered as colorful characters who were products of the times in which they lived. Excerpts

PrologueHe was exhausted - beyond exhausted, actually. Every muscle in his body ached, and the pain shooting up his leg told him that the bullet had done far more damage than he'd first imagined. The sun was beating down on him, and though his vision was blurred, he knew without having to look down that he was losing a great deal of blood at a very rapid rate. The random shots he'd fired back at his pursuers had all been way off target because of that cursed sun in his eyes. His leg throbbing, he realized he would have to crawl to safety, so he began to drag his weakened body along the ground. He paused for a moment in the field, hidden by the tall wheat that seemed to whisper in the warm breeze. Perhaps if he attempted to make a tourniquet around his leg it would stop the blood. Perhaps. But was it worth it? The agony was now more than he could bear. But still he refused to let them take him alive. He had vowed long ago never to let that happen. With only one bullet left, the decision was remarkably easy to make. That bullet was meant for one person, and one person only.He raised the gun slowly, and fired.
