Summary

Legends, Volume 4carries on the tradition of its predecessors, profiling great horses who have significantly influenced the Quarter Horse breed. Four mares and 13 stallions comprise this volume, which includes both tales that predate the 1940 formation of the American Quarter Horse Association, and contemporary stories whose ultimate conclusions may not be known for years to come. Each chapter is devoted to a specific stallion or mare, and includes a four-generation pedigree, a summary of the horse's performance accomplishments, a sire or production record, and several photographs. Yet what sets theLegendsbooks apart from pure pedigree research is the personal information and commentary from the people involved with each horse--the people stories behind the horse tales.

Excerpts

From chapter titled "Fillinic"

She arrived at Greg Ward's modest Poplar, Calif., training facility after being purchased at auction by Basque businessman Frank Maitia. Her past was questionable.

Several owners had passed her on, each apparently unable to handle the filly's explosive energy. That energy was the first thing Ward noticed as he rode across the pasture to find the refined little mare tied to his fence and creating a minor dust storm, pawing a hole in the ground deep enough to make a gopher proud.

Even her pedigree was questionable. Several generations back there appears a mysterious mare who had wandered in off the Arizona desert and was simply known as the Fiedler Mare #33. Now that mystery mare's fourth-generation offspring stood wide-eyed and shooting sparks in Ward's yard. Her name was Fillinic.
