Author Biography

Leonard Maltin is one of the country's most respected film historians and critics. He presides over www.leonardmaltin.com and publishes a quarterly newsletter for old-movie buffs called Leonard Maltin's Movie Crazy. After establishing himself with a series of definitive books on topics ranging from Hollywood cameramen to the history of animated cartoons, he became known to an even wider audience for his appearances on television's popular syndicated program Entertainment Tonight, where he has worked since 1982. He also cohosts the weekend movie review show Hot Ticket, and serves as film critic for Playboy magazine. He hosts a daily radio program, Leonard Maltin's Video View, and provides regular commentary for the Encore cable TV channel. His books include The Great American Broadcast, Leonard Maltin's Family Film Guide, Of Mice and Magic: A History of American Animated Cartoons, The Great Movie Comedians, The Disney Films, The Art of the Cinematographer, Movie Comedy Teams, Selected Short Subjects (The Great Movie Shorts), The Whole Film Sourcebook, Leonard Maltin's Movie Encyclopedia, and (as coauthor) The Little Rascals: The Life and Times of Our Gang. He teaches at the University of Southern California, in the Cinema-Television Department, and served for two years as president of the Los Angeles Film Critics Association. As a member of the National Film Preservation Board, he votes on the twenty-five films named each year to join the Library of Congress' National Film Registry. For nine years he was the editor and publisher of Film Fan Monthly magazine; his articles have appeared in The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, The Times (of London), Premiere, Smithsonian, TV Guide, Variety, Esquire, Disney Magazine, Film Comment, and Cowboys and Indians. He is also a contributor to Oxford University Press' Dictionary of American Biography. He lectures on film subjects around the country, and for nine years was a member of the faculty of the New School for Social Research in New York City. In 1976 he served as guest programmer for the Museum of Modern Art's Bicentennial Salute to American Film Comedy and returned in 1985 to organize a tribute to Warner Bros. Cartoons. He has written a number of television specials, including Added Attractions: The Hollywood Shorts Story and Fantasia: The Creation of a Disney Classic, and is currently hosting and coproducing a DVD series, Walt Disney Treasures. He has produced, written, and hosted such original cable TV and home-video programs as Cartoon Madness: The Fantastic Max Fleischer Cartoons, Young Duke: The Making of a Movie Star (which debuted on A and E's Biography), Cliffhangers: Adventures from the Thrill Factory, The Making of "The Quiet Man," The Making of "High Noon," The Lost Stooges, and Cartoons for Big Kids. He and his wife, Alice, are the proud parents of Jessica Bennett Maltin, who is now this book's official consultant on hot (and not-so-hot) young actors.
