Potts is a historian of American colleges and universities and has served liberal arts education in a variety of roles: professor of American history, scholar-in-residence, academic dean, alumnus, and trustee. He is a graduate of Wesleyan University and received his Ph.D. from Harvard. His most recent book is Wesleyan University, 1831-1910: Collegiate Enterprise in New England.
