Summary

For Six Weeks in the late summer of 1862, bands of Sioux warriors massacred settlers, government agents, and soldiers in southwestern Minnesota. Their rampage was precipitated by years of rampant fraud in the Office of Indian Affairs, but the price was exacted from farmers and their families. As many as eight hundred were killed, and several thousand fled the region.
