Excerpts

"Please remove your keys and step away from your motorcycle," a deep voice announced. I dismounted, putting my keys in my pocket. Four husky guards surrounded me, giving me an unwelcome escort into the checkpoint building. Don't they have any guards under six foot, I wondered? I must look awfully threatening down here. ... I was told to sit with some other hapless people who were waiting on hard, plastic chairs lined up along the wall. Finally, my turn came. The biggest guard of them all motioned me over to a desk. I sat watching him warily while he perused a sheaf of papers laid out before him. "Why were you in Canada?" He looked across his desk at me with a scowl on his face. I was so surprised I blurted out, "We went to a birthday party." For thousands of miles and weeks of travel we'd been telling people that we'd gone east to Harley-Davidson's one-hundredth birthday party. I was so flustered that it never occurred to me that my flat-out statement wouldn't make any sense to these guys. "Who is we, and where was the birthday party?" The guards' beady eyes pinned me to my chair. "My husband and I rode our bikes to Milwaukee, Wisconsin for Harley-Davidson's one-hundredth birthday. We went to the party." I looked over at him with total innocence. In my naivety, I figured everybody would understand that.
