Summary

This book is the first on lobbying the European Union since the Maastricht Treaty. It uses real life cases to analyse: issues, alliances, stakeholders, organisations and how they chose to enter and participate in the EU's decision making process. Campaigns are evaluated and conclusions drawn about effective methods. The 'hero organizations' are as varied as their objectives, reflecting the diversity of EU lobbies. Five cases concern companies and another five trade associations. These ten commercial lobbies are complemented by four which were 'not for profit'. Authors come from five different countries, as do their subjects. Most cases are written by leading participants, some by academics. The common theme which links them is that, for this diverse range of organizations, lobbying works. Few of them, however, achieved all their objectives; there are useful lessons for the future. The book should enable both commercial and voluntary sector managers to improve their own EU lobbying performance, drawing on recent experience. Increasingly, all managements are affected by EU decisions: hence, the ability to influence the process is an important management skill.
