Summary

Low and Slow is a humorous novel about Dario D'Angelo, a San Francisco native who is a jazz pianist. A music major, he graduates from college in 1956 and joins the navy´s new Aviation Officer Candidate program to avoid being drafted into the army. He chooses Naval Aviation not because he is thrilled with the prospect of flying, but because of the extra flight pay, and because he is advised that naval aviators score highest for girls' sexual favors. Girls are very important to Dario. His father, Babbo, has trained him extensively in the art of seduction. A civilian at heart, Dario has a difficult time adjusting to navy rules, especially when marines enforce them. He is disciplined before senior officers so often, he makes a study of the mountains displayed on their desk name plaques. He is constantly on the brink of being washed out of the flight program, or worse, although he flies very well. And, as if there were not enough risks for him with military regulations, marines, and flying, he meets Michelle Duquesne, a rich, spoiled, Scarlett O'Hara clone, with whom he falls in love.
