The newspapers start to refer to the "Mad Hatter" as the perpetrator. But then a body is found near Traitor's Gate at the Tower, with a stolen hat on his head. The owner of the stolen headgear, Sir William Bitton, has lost two hats in three days which is almost more remarkable to him than the fact that he may have in his keeping an unpublished manuscript by Edgar Allan Poe.
